Admittedly, when I started to deal with the war in the Pacific almost 50 years ago, I knew nothing more about the islands there than Bali, Tahiti, white sandy beach, palm trees, blue sea.
But if you look more closely, you discover that the majority of the islands, which were so important in 1942-1945, were not located on the equator, and palm tree growth and idyll were sometimes very limited.
