A very detailed kit that needs almost no additions (only
the
representation of seat belts by decals is not convincing). Nevertheless I like
clear PVC canopies better and faced with the problem to either add pilot and
gunner and keep the bomb bay closed or show the detailed bomb bay but have
to fold the wings I chose the latter alternative (never does an aircraft start
or land with an open bomb bay! - On carriers deck space is sparse so aircraft are
parked with wings folded).
- How to mould canopies see modeling
ABC page C. The turret was
moulded in one piece too. Frames by decals (admittedly no easy task).
- Folded wings: In principle as described in
the "folded wings"
page, but in this case two problems arose: The wings had to be turned to lay lengthwise and in
front view forming an angle and the "spar" to which the outer wing was to get
onto had to clear the wheel well at an oblique angle. So after
a lot of unsuccessful attempts I used a single aluminum tube fastened in the
stub wing in the usual plastic "house", these tubes sliding into
a plastic "house" of
the outer wing which could be turned to the appropriate angle. When in the real TBF the wings are folded a triangular
door opens on the underside of the inner wing, this feature was used as
additional hold for the wing (glued onto).
- A very prominent feature of wartime Grumman aircraft
(F4F/FM, F6F, TBF/TBM) not to be seen in any kit is the
panel behind the
cowling: Its rear protudes about the breadth of a thumb! I made it
from thin aluminum, the fuselage surface being accordingly thinned
at top, bottom and front to get a flush fit.
- Deck crew all hand made.
